Salmonberries is a 1991 German drama film directed by Percy Adlon, and written by Adlon and his son. It stars k.d. lang as Kotzebue, an orphaned Eskimo and young woman of androgynous appearance. Kotzebue is named for the tiny northwest Alaskan town where she was found abandoned as a baby. She works as a male miner in Alaska, and befriends Roswitha (Rosel Zech), an widowed East German librarian in exile . Kotzebue and Roswitha develop a lesbian relationship. The film's title takes its name from the jars of preserved berries that line the walls of Roswitha's bedroom. With Chuck Connors, Jane Lind, Oscar Kawagley and Wolfgang Steinberg. The film takes place in Kotzebue, Alaska and Berlin, Germany, shortly after reunification. The dialog is mostly English but includes some German with English subtitles. Singer k.d. lang, performs an evocative ballad, "Barefoot," in the film; this was co-written by lang and Bob Telson. Salmonberries won the Grand Prix des Amériques (Best Film), Montreal World Film Festival in 1991. Rotten Tomatoes scored it 71% based on 7 reviews, with a weighted average of 6.21/10.
