NHK Dive in Tokyo 2026 Tama New Town: The Capital's Largest Urban Planning Project 1080p HDTV AV1-MVGroup
Tama New Town is a vast residential development in western Tokyo. Once the object of admiration, its aging population has become a social concern—but residents are now stepping up to help one another.
Tama Center train station is in the heart of town. It serves over 100,000 people daily. In front of the station, restaurants, department stores, and more line the streets, drawing shoppers from local neighborhoods as well as the surrounding areas.
Residents started living here in March 1971. Applications poured in, especially from child-rearing families who were tired of living in cramped quarters in central Tokyo. Here's a complex that opened in 1986. By staggering the levels in this way, they were able to develop the hillside while preserving the natural terrain as much as possible.
An increasing number of elderly parents found themselves living alone in deteriorating housing. Today, there are some complexes where over half the residents are age 65 or older.
Fukushi-tei is a community cafe that provides a welcoming space for the older demographic of Tama New Town. After decades of living here and raising their children, some residents are finally finding their community.
