Rise of the Rockstar Chef S01 complete (1080p, soft English subtitles)
Fights, feuds and the pursuit of perfection. Marco Pierre White, Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal ripped up the rulebook of fine dining - and put British cuisine on the map.
E01 In the late 1980s, the British culinary scene was dominated by the traditions and techniques of French cuisine, and the kitchen hierarchy was rigid and unforgiving. Then, a working-class northerner with no interest in the rules became the most talked-about chef in the country. Marco Pierre White burst onto the scene and changed the future of British gastronomy, setting the standard that Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal would later be measured against. The story begins with the opening of Harvey’s in 1987, the restaurant that made Marco's name. Contributors, including Marcus Wareing, Michel Roux Jr, Angela Hartnett, Clare Smyth and Tom Kerridge, reflect on what it meant to cook in the shadow of France and how Marco mastered the classical foundations before tearing up the rule book. Into this world came a young Gordon Ramsay, hungry to learn and determined to prove himself. Under Marco's wing, he was tested to the limit. Gordon's remarkable stamina and his ability to learn quickly are explored, along with the stories that became kitchen legend, including falling asleep on the job during 18-hour shifts. Former colleagues and fellow chefs recall a driven newcomer who absorbed everything around him, and the bond, part mentorship and part rivalry, that took shape between teacher and pupil. Meanwhile, a third force was emerging from a very different direction. Heston Blumenthal worked alongside Marco but shunned the traditional route to excellence, approaching cooking as a scientist might, asking why food behaves as it does and turning those answers into a fresh vision of what fine dining could achieve. His experimental mindset lifted the gastronomic experience to heights nobody had imagined and added a new dimension to the revolution already reshaping British cooking. Set against the backdrop of the 'Cool Britannia' era of radical social and cultural change, the series explores a decade when fashion, politics and music were being torn up and rewritten. Another rock 'n' roll revolution was happening in the UK, this time in the kitchen. The story is one of rivalry and the pursuit of perfection, where the real heat was not just in the kitchen.
E02 Every chef dreams of a Michelin star. Episode two of Rise of the Rockstar Chef follows the hunt for that recognition, and for the leap that separates the great from the legendary. Moving from one star to two is hard, but the hardest jump of all is from two to three. Marco Pierre White made that leap, becoming the first British chef to win three Michelin stars, and the youngest ever to do so. The episode explores what the pursuit demanded and what it cost. Marco reflects on the price of perfection. and how success also brings a rupture. Gordon Ramsay, who learned his craft under Marco, leaves to build his own name, and both men look back on the emotion of that parting. When menus from Aubergine begin appearing on Marco's desk, the friendship is over. Gordon recounts the story of the stealing of the restaurant’s reservation book, the crown jewels of any restaurant, revealing just how bitter the split became. Marcus Wareing, Gordon's first employee, recalls the early days of Gordon's kitchen and the fierce ambition driving it. As the 90s unfold, Heston Blumenthal’s drive, creativity and uncompromising pursuit of excellence transforms modern British cuisine. Heston cooks in a completely different way, and his food blows minds. It is pure theatre, with equipment unlike anything seen in a normal kitchen. Dishes such as the triple-cooked chip, taking two years to perfect, went on to change not just food but kitchens in restaurants and at home. With the opening of The Fat Duck, his home is on the line, and the need for success is huge.
Meanwhile, the empires expand. Marco and Gordon take over the kitchens of some of London's top hotels, and their restaurants become the places to be. Marco’s restaurant Titanic draws the Spice Girls, Oasis, footballers and the tabloids, with as many as 4,000 guests passing through in a single night - a 90s Studio 54. Contributors describe the energy of those years, and the revolutionary push for creativity in ways never seen before. When Heston is crowned the number one chef in the world, he voices the immensity of the pressure, his inferiority complex and the highs and lows of extreme success.
E03 By the start of the new millennium, the three chefs had changed British dining forever. This episode follows what happens when the rivalry that made them gets harder to walk away from than to feed, and brings them together for the first time in decades, exploring how each man handled the success he had fought for. Will time have healed old wounds, or will old rivalries still burn brightly?
