NHK Dive in Tokyo 2026 Roppongi: From Nightlife District to Cultural Hub 1080p HDTV AV1-MVGroup
Roppongi is the dynamic district that never sleeps. It evolved from a samurai quarter into a military town, later blossomed as a nightlife hub, and more recently has been transformed by art.
Centuries ago, Roppongi was home to the mansions of lords and elite samurai. This garden belonged to the Mohri family from western Japan, so it's called Mohri Garden. Then in the late 1800s, these lands were used as military lands.
After World War II, the military site in this area served as U.S. Army installation up until 1958. They were home to officers' quarters and more. Most of the land was later returned to Japan. However, facilities including a helipad and lodging remain and are in use today.
Postwar Roppongi became a gathering place for American military officers and soldiers. Gradually, trendy young Japanese also started gravitating to Roppongi. Close to the Roppongi Crossing is a discotheque that was a defining symbol of Japan's bubble economy of the late '80s.
Big changes came to town in 2003, with the opening of Roppongi Hills. This "town" was designed to integrate business, community life, and culture. The developer put an art museum at the highest point. He believed that an economically-driven town that lacked culture would not have international appeal.
