Name: Bitter Sweet Symphony
Artist: The Verve
Year: 1997
iMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5680600/
Genre: Music, Britpop
Director: Walter A. Stern
Writer: Richard Ashcroft
Storyline: The video is an intentional homage to Massive Attack's 1991 video for "Unfinished Sympathy," which similarly
features a continuous tracking shot of a singer walking through an urban environment.
Tagline: "I'mma a million different, people, from one day to the next"...
Trivia: The song builds on a 1965/1966 orchestral cover of the Rolling Stones' song "The Last Time," recorded by the
Andrew Oldham Orchestra.
While the Verve cleared the sound recording rights with Decca Records, they failed to get clearance for the
underlying composition from ABKCO Records, run by the Rolling Stones' former manager Allen Klein.
Under threat of a lawsuit, the Verve surrendered 100% of the songwriting royalties and co-credits to Mick
Jagger and Keith Richards.
In May 2019, 22 years later and 10 years after Klein's death-Jagger and Richards formally signed over the
publishing rights and returned the royalties to Richard Ashcroft.
